There is no doubt that the OEM Boss 302 Crankshaft is probably the strongest crankshaft available for the money period...for any engine platform. The biggest issue is that these crankshafts are mass produced and Ford packs them like crap. Most come in excellent condition, but we have seen plenty that have been dinged, bent, covered in surface rust...ect.
The solution is to purchase in bulk and have Ford ship the crankshafts to us on a pallet. This way they are less prone to being damaged in parcel freight. We then inspect each crankshaft for straightness, rust and defects of any sort. Any sharp edges are deburred and crankshaft is then 3 stage micro polished and cleaned just as if it was going into our assembly room. After cleaning, one of our technicians will thoroughly inspect the crankshaft journals once more, then measure and record the crankshaft journal dimensions to a tolerance of 0.0001" or one ten thousanths.
Once the measuring is done, the crankshaft is then sprayed down with rust inhibitor, vacuum bagged and professionally packaged. Crankshafts are shipped with a specification sheet noting all journal dimensions.
Please note that this crankshaft does require balancing to your specific Connecting Rods and Pistons. There is absolutelty NO EXCEPTIONS for not having the crankshaft balanced. If you have a local machine shop that is doing your machine work and is capable of providing accurate weights, we will gladly balance the crankshaft before shipping. We also offer a 9/16" Crankshaft Stud modification that is highly suggested for blower applications.
While many others offer double key options, we do not. Why? The keyway is for locating purposes only. Once the keyway(s) are needed to carry the load from crankshaft components, it's too late. The cause of this is improper balancer installation and / or less than par fasteners. At a minimum, we recommend the Kinetik Motorsports Crankshaft Stud for all blower applications. The overall best option is our 9/16" Crankshaft Stud modification which locates the back of the stud just past the front of #1 main journal. More surface area means more clamping force. Clamping force is what holds everything together. Our 9/16" Stud can be torqued to 180 ft/lbs which will more than handle any type of blower drive system without comprosing crankshaft integrity.
