How to install TFS adjustable crank gears
|
The pictures below show the proper alignment
of TFS crank gears. Note that the passenger side and driver
side are different from the front view. Both gears should have
the center extension facing each other just like the original 2
piece crank gears that Ford used from 91-98. These TFS gears
are an adjustable version of those early gears. We have found
them to be highly accurate. The only issue is that the drivers
gear only rides on half of the crankshaft keyway and should be
welded or pinned to the passenger gear. Otherwise you risk the
drivers gear ripping the keyway and spinning independently of the
crankshaft which will bend all the drivers valves. Ford
changed this in 99 and made these one piece gears.
Also note that all settings are done from the front view as you see each gear. The crank keyway needs to line up to the inner row of markings and the timing chain mark needs to line up to the outer row of markings! The above is the most common mistake installing these we have found. If your cam does not need to advance or retard you use the 0 setting for both the inner and outer. If your cam DOES need to advance or retard then the same marking HAS to be used for both the crank keyway and the timing chain like shown in the pictures below. We will start with the drivers side gear first.

|
This drivers side gear is installed at the
A8
position which is advancing this cam 8 degrees. Notice that
the center extended flange of the gear is pointing forward, only the
driver gear is done this way.

|
Same driver side gear and now looking at the timing chain mark. This is the proper location for advancing 8 degrees. Whatever setting you need both the crank keyway and the timing chain have to use the matching setting! If you wanted to use any other setting you simply move BOTH the chain and crank keyway marks to the setting you need. Look closely at the above and below pictures to see that A8 was used properly on both the crank keyway and the timing chain. The keyway uses the inner row and the chain uses the outer row and they both have to match!

Now here is the passenger side gear at the retard 4 position, this is where it needs to be to retard the cam 4 degrees. Notice that the center protrusion is facing rearward towards the drivers gear, this is the only way to install the passenger side crank gear and you read the settings from the front of the motor only. Both protrusions have to face each other.

Here is the same passenger side gear looking at the timing chain mark for retarding 4 degrees:

Next you install the spacer for the crank trigger if using the thin stamped trigger wheel (which we highly recommend to use as the earlier cast trigger wheel is prone to cracking)
|
|
Here is the proper thin stamped trigger wheel with the proper location of the spacer:
The cast thick trigger wheel as used by Ford up to 1999 is junk IMHO, just get a stamped one. |
