Area under the curve - how to make more HP and run slower at the track and on the street

 
 

Here is an example of how to make more peak horsepower and at the same time run slower at the track.

 

 

 

Horsepower sells cars but torque wins races.  If you are old school you heard that all the time, however for most of you today building a street/strip car it still holds true as most are still working in the RPM range below 7000.  Most I see on the internet get caught up with the peak numbers when in fact they should be looking at the area under the curve as shown above.  The area under the curve is where the engine will be operating most of the time at the track rather than the quick flash of time spent at peak HP.  This car above slowed down with the intake swap even though it made more peak power.
