How to build an 11 second NA NPI on a budget
by Brandon Rovendro

I
bought the car in October of 2006 when I was 15 years old.
It had nothing more then a cold air intake, 373 gears, under
drive pulleys, and a few appearance mods. I daily
drove it that way for about two years until I finished high
school, stated working full time and was able to buy a daily
driver.
I
started the motor build in June of 2008, and for 6 months I
pieced together a whole engine including a block, crank,
rods, pistons. etc. In the 6 months I collected parts
I hand ported a set of NPI heads myself. Then I had a
3 angle valve job done, stainless steel valves, and comp
beehive valve springs were installed. The bottom end
consists of a stock iron block, that just needed a good hone
job, and the crank got a good polishing too. It has a
set of Mod Max forged I beam rods, and 96-98 4v cobra
pistons, using perfect circle piston rings. Using the
4v pistons bumped the compression ratio up to a little over
10:1. It has Clevite bearings, and a FRPP high volume
oil pump, Modular Head Shop stage 3.5 NPI grind cams,
MHS cam degree service, and TFS adjustable crank sprockets.
The
intake setup on the car includes a JLT ram air intake, 90mm
mass air flow, a 75mm throttle body which is bolted to the
MHS 6061 upper plenum. It has a 2" open phenolic carb
spacer and the Edelbrock victor JR. for the 4.6L. That
also received a full port and port matching job by myself.
For
the fuel system the car has a Walbro 255lph in tank pump,
Edelbrock fuel rails, FRPP 30lb injectors, and the fuel
pressure is regulated by a MMR fuel pressure regulator.
For
exhaust i went with Flowtech longtubes, O/R H pipe, and MAC
flow path mufflers with turn downs.
The
car still uses the stock T45 transmission, and the rear has
a set of ford racing 4:56 gears.
The
car has a full UPR suspension. The front consists of,
UPR K member, A arms, and 14150 coil overs, Maximum
Motorsports caster/camber plates, a Steeda bump steer kit,
and a 99+ mustang dual piston brake caliper swap which also
cut a few pounds. The rear has a set of lowering
springs, UPR solid upper and lower control arms, with
spherical bushings, and Lakewood 50/50 shocks. There
are no sway bars front or rear.
It
rolls on a set of Race Star Industries, Dragstar rims.
15x3.75 in the front with 165/80 tires, and the rears are
15x8 with 275/50 Goodyear eagle drag radials.
The
car has some weight reduction done to it and weighs just
under 3000lbs empty. It has no air conditioning parts
under the hood, manual brakes, and no power steering.
It
still has a FULL leather interior including the OEM mach 460
sound system!
The
car gets its look from a cobra front bumper, smoked
headlights, and fog lights, a Kaenen 6" cowl hood, and a
saleen s-281 spoiler.
In
the next few things I plan to finish the
rear end build, a 99+ Coil on plug swap, a set of 90/10 lake
wood front struts, and an aluminum drive shaft. The car has
been a very fun project, and is no where near being
complete. The car has been a best of 11.93@115 in the 1/4,
with a best 60' of 1.59! and it didn't come easy. The car
will also be getting a nitrous kit in the next few month,
I'm hoping to get it into the 10.90's on a 125shot.
MHS Stage 3.5 NA NPI cams
set the NPI NA record at 12.08@114MPH
MHS Stage 3.5 NA NPI cams
become the first to break the 11 second NPI NA barrier!
